Team Leader – Civil Engineer

Job description

Purpose and Objectives:

Provide specialist engineering services and lead project-based teams to deliver quality, commercially focused civil engineering solutions across RECOR.

This role is part of the Senior Leadership team and provides support to Executive Management in growing and leading a skilled team of engineering professionals with a focus on continuous improvement regarding customer satisfaction, performance, quality, productivity, cost reduction, sustainability and overall staff development. The Engineering team have the core functions of engineering design, engineering advice, asset management, and project support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with other discipline leaders to provide staff with consistent, supportive, and engaging leadership in line with RECOR Values.
  • Deliver regular communications to staff to ensure team members are well informed of priorities, progress and initiatives.
  • Promote and support innovation, continuous improvement, and leadership initiatives.
  • Foster engagement by communicating staff ideas, concerns and initiatives.
  • Ensure staff are provided with technical mentoring and opportunities for personal development.
  • Support workforce recruitment, retention, training, and succession planning to meet the needs of the business.
  • Support and drive the development of engineering to a collaborative culture of commercial intelligence, customer-focus, and accountability.
  • Responsible for day-to-day line management of direct reports, including performance management with escalation to the Executive Director as agreed/appropriate.
  • Ensure staff have performance and development plans appropriate to business and individual needs.
  • Conduct formal 1-on-1 performance and development review sessions in line with company policy.
  • Proactively provide informal support and feedback to staff to assist them in achieving agreed goals.
  • Ensure staff employ correct financial and project management practices.
  • Build strong working relationships with key stakeholders and customers.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and collaborative working relationships with staff to build a cohesive and efficient resource unit.
  • Perform engineering tasks to deliver our core functions, including:
    • Carry out design, review and approval of engineering solutions.
    • Provide responsive and accurate engineering advice to internal and external customers.
    • Write and review procedures and standards, and other technical documentation and drawings.
    • Manage and/or contribute to proposal and tender preparation.
    • Suggest and contribute to eliminating and/or mitigating risks.
    • Support internal audits to ensure staff maintain the agreed standards, systems and processes.
    • Track actions and deliverables of internal and external parties and escalate as appropriate.
    • Manage assigned projects to ensure completion within budgets and timeframe.
    • Participate in knowledge sharing, training, and mentoring of Engineering staff.
    • Keep up to date with new engineering technology and techniques.
    • Lead and manage the scoping of projects with a focus on innovations and continuous improvement.
    • Maintain comprehensive best-practice documentation and record-keeping to enable review and future reference. o Other relevant duties as required

Education:

  • Min. B. Eng Civil
  • RPEQ or eligible for RPEQ certification.
  • Project management qualification advantageous.

Previous Experience:

  • 10+ years’ experience in Civil Engineering and/or Design
  • 3+ years’ experience in Project Management
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals.
  • Experience managing engineering projects to achieve output targets.
  • Ability to foster and manage relationships with other teams and business groups.
  • Previous experience in managing and developing a team
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products (Word, Excel, etc.), 12d Model, AutoCAD, 12d Synergy.
  • Strong communicator with the desire to foster a culture of collaboration and constructive feedback.
  • Organised, responsive, dependable
